Seasonal changes got you in a mood?

There are things you can do to improve your mood and restore your energy.

Some people welcome fall and winter with open arms, looking forward to cooler weather and pumpkin spice lattes. However, others may experience energy and mood changes related to the changing seasons, especially at the start of fall and winter. Serious changes in mental wellbeing may be a sign of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression that occurs according to season.

Seasonal shifts in mood and energy can be attributed to a disruption of your body’s internal clock and a drop in serotonin, both stemming from reduced sunlight in the winter months. These changes can in turn affect your ability to take care of yourself and manage your chronic condition.

If you notice yourself feeling a bit moody and down in the fall and winter, consider trying a few of these tips to improve your mood and overall well being:

1. Try light therapy - There are special light boxes that mimic natural outdoor light and can alter your brain chemicals that are linked to mood. Being exposed to this light in the first hour of waking up can help set a better tone for the day.

2. Stay socially involved – Make time for regular social activities, as your friends and family can help provide you with support during the winter months.

3. Spend more time outdoors – Even on cloudy or colder days, being outside can improve your energy and mood. If being outside isn’t practical for you, keeping your blinds open and letting sunlight into your indoor spaces can have a similar effect.
